76th Goodwood GRRC Members Meeting Race report 21st March 2018

Posted 22/03/2018

The 2018 race season has now kicked off with an unexpected sight, a layer of snow over the daffodils that line the Goodwood Motor circuit for the annual GRRC Members Meeting. The challenging conditions of the weekend however failed to hamper the usual track antics and excitement associated with the historic circuit.

CKL brought along a Lister Jaguar Knobbly this year to compete in the Salvadori Cup, a race dedicated to Roy Salvadori for world championship sportscars from the 1950s and 60s. A very cold qualifying session meant that Martin Stretton, who was piloting our Lister, had his hands full getting the power down, as well as a lack of visibility to deal with thanks to the snow coming down. For much of the session he led the fight for the fastest lap time, however on the penultimate lap the lack of grip out of the chicane resulted in a spin at which point the Lister of Minshaw pipped him to pole.

The race on Sunday was set to be another exhilarating display, the snow still lined the circuit edges, but the skies looked clear for the duration. Starting from the front row Stretton managed a clean start and took an early lead with Andrew Smith making up places into 2nd with a brace of Lotus 15’s nipping at their heels. The two Lotus’ and the Lister of Smith fought it out for 2nd allowing Stretton to considerably increase his lead to over 3 seconds. Mid-way through the race Roger Wills in the unpainted Lotus 15 found his way past the 2nd place Lister, at which point he had the CKL Lister firmly in his sights. The lighter Lotus could gain better traction through the corners and whittled the gap down over the final few laps however unable to make up the difference Stretton took the chequered flag after a commanding lead and some fantastic driving.

CKL will be back out on track this season with entries in all the major events including Le Mans Classic, Silverstone Classic, Monaco Historique, as well as the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival.
