Concours E-Type Roadster
From a seemingly good 1961 E-Type roadster with a few body issues, produce a nicely restored and usable car.
It quickly became apparent during the strip down that under the paint and trim, the car was in a lot worse state than first visible. The decision was then made to carry out a full Concours restoration rather than a semi restoration / recommission.
Full strip: including removing all the interior trim, hood & frame, engine, gearbox, drive train, suspension/brakes, electrical components and wiring harness, exterior chrome-work, doors, bonnet, boot-lid & chassis frames.
Body: shot-blast to remove all corrosion, cut out all unusable/corroded metalwork, weld-in new inner structural panels, floors, sills, members and exterior panels as required, make-good remaining panels and repair any old damage. All panel gaps are set and the bare metal car is dry built with frames, glass, seals, bumpers and chrome-work to ensure a perfect fit on final assembly. A minimum amount of body filler is applied and shaped at this stage. Next is a hi-build polyester coat which is rubbed back to give the finished shape, then etch primer, primer and finally top-coat. The body cavities are finally treated with a wax for future protection.
Chassis: new chassis frames are fitted which are identical shape and profile to originals but from upgraded steel.
Suspension: shot-blasted, inspected, crack tested and re-plated. New standard or uprated bushes and standard or uprated torsion bars, springs and dampers
Steering: overhauled with minor upgrade to improve drivability
Wheels & Tyres: standard size chrome wires with Pirelli Cinturato tyres
Brakes: standard S1 Kelsey-Hayes system and Dunlop calipers with uprated brake pads
Engine: standard rebuild including acid dipping, re-grind, re-bore, balance, cylinder head overhaul & hi-flow oil system. New parts fitted include pistons, rings, bearings shells, timing chains and gears, valves, valve guides, valve seats & oil pump.
Carburettors: Fully overhauled and restored.
Electrical: New wiring harness, instruments overhauled and electrical components and ancillaries restored or renewed as required.
Trim: Full re-trim to top-quality standard finish.
Result is a show-standard car that drives as well as it looks, is very much together and finished for today’s road driving conditions
