1959 Elva MK3

In 1947, Frank Nichols completed his military service and purchased a small garage in Westham, England. While he was indeed successful at the small site, Frank soon moved to a much larger premises in Bexhill, East Sussex (the birthplace of motor racing). He began with a Lotus VI and campaigned a CSM special to great success, while wanting to create his own design. In 1955, Frank did just that, and founded Elva Engineering Company.

The Elva MK3 on offer is the original car which was sold to Carol Shelby’s chief mechanic, Thomas Greatorex of Ohio and was first registered on 1st January 1959. Greatorex first raced the car on August 15th, 1959 at Harewood Acres, placing 6th, facing opposition such as a Jaguar XKSS and Porsche 718RSK Spyder. The last known race in which Greatorex competed in was at Watkins Glen on 18th October, where he would race against the likes of Stirling Moss, Jo Bonnier and Roger Penske. The race consisted of 235 miles of fighting against a Jaguar D-type, Maserati 300S, RSK Porsche and multiple Ferrari’s.

Sold to Ralph Hoyt in 1962, the Elva was fitted with A 1500 Ford Cosworth engine and would continue to race through the 60’s in local club events. Moving to 1992 where the car would enter the ownership of specialist Henry Philip Schmidt of Supertec Performance. The Elva remained in the US until 2008 when it was exported to the UK where it was sold at an auction in 2009. The next owner would sympathetically restore the car to preserve originality and functionality until sold at auction again in 2016. The current owner has enjoyed the Elva at various events over the past two years and has once again strived to preserve its originality.

Still sitting on its original chassis with lightly restored original body, with the 1450cc Coventry Climax OHC FWB engine utilising 2 twin choke 40 DCOE Weber carburettors. The car is also still housing its original Alfin inboard brake drums. Recent race history consists of events at Brands Hatch, Crystal Palace hill climb and Shere hill climb. With such an impressive racing history and high-profile ownership, this Elva MK3 is hard to look past. With the original factory located a couple of miles away, you could say that this Elva has made its way home.
