1989 Lynx D-type – ‘Longnose’
Lynx Cars, the world-renowned company, arguably builds the best Jaguar D-type recreations in the world. Using the Jaguar E-type as its base and utilising its running gear, this sets the perfect platform for a road going D-type. Lynx focused on every correct detail to produce the most accurate example of the legendary Jaguar, with most parts being technically identical to the originals.
The Lynx D-type on offer is built under the ‘Longnose’ specification, with the elongated bonnet and tail fin, modelled off the 1957 Le Mans winning D-type driven by Ron Flockhart and Ivor Bueb. Built off an early Jaguar E-type, this Lynx D uses the 3.8 XK engine, with correct triple weber DCOE’s, correct manifolds, pistons, camshafts, valve gear and uses a semi synchro Moss gearbox. The centre section is constructed of stressed monocoque with hand rolled aluminium which has been hand beaten and welded. The bonnet and rear section are also crafted from hand rolled aluminium to perfectly replicate the original Jaguar.
The car was ordered and built for Robin Sturgess, who is well known for his C-Type and E-Type racing successes in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s and owner of Sturgess of Leicester, one of the UK’s oldest Jaguar retailers. The car has covered just over 11,000 miles, has been in the same ownership since built and comes with a comprehensive history and maintenance file including original invoices and correspondence. The D-Type has been used, amongst other things, for Dealership promotional activities and is well known on the Jaguar club scene. It is a sad departure from the Sturgess family as it has given huge pleasure to everyone who has ever driven it or seen it.
This Lynx D-type was completed and registered in 1989, finished in British racing green with a green leather interior and full-size screen. The car has developed a healthy patina over the years, which adds to the special and quite personal history of the car. Fitted with the side-exit exhaust, the glorious rumble of the straight-six XK engine is testament to how the age of motorsport should be remembered. For any serious petrolhead, a Lynx D-type should be at the top of the list for ownership, with this car offering that very opportunity.
